Abstract In this letter, the effect of Mn on growth mechanism and morphology evolution of CrB 2 particles was studied in detail. Results show that without Mn addition, CrB 2 can be formed with six plate morphology, while trace Mn addition lead to morphology evolution of CrB 2 and forming doped (Cr 1−x Mn x )B 2 with square lamella morphology. Besides, excessive Mn addition changed the chemical composition of Al-Cr-B system and a new phase, doped (Cr 1−x Mn x ) 3 B 4 with well-developed {0 1 0} faces was formed. Overall, a synthesis route of CrB 2 crystals with controllable morphology was established.
