Abstract A promising strategy to synergistically improve the water resistance, wet strength and UV-blocking property of cellulose nanofiber (CNF) nanopaper via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of aramid nanofiber (ANF) film was proposed. The water resistance, optical properties and mechanical performances (in dry and wet states) of the resultant CNF@ANF hybrid nanopapers were investigated. The results show that CNF@ANF nanocomposites display excellent water resistance, wet strength and UV-blocking properties. Especially, the wet strength of CNF@ANF10 paper reached 101 MPa after soaked in water for 24 h, which was 86 times higher than pure CNF nanopaper, representing one of the strongest CNF-based hybrid nanopapers in fully wet conditions, which will be favorable for the potential advanced applications.
