Abstract Novel high-entropy oxides (i.e. multiple-cation solid solutions with high configurational entropies) with the composition of 10La 2 O 3 -20TiO 2 -10Nb 2 O 5 -20WO 3 -20ZrO 2 (LTNWZ) were successfully prepared by containerless solidification through aerodynamic levitation. The glass transition temperature T g was 688 °C and the crystallization onset temperature T x was 757 °C, between which the difference (Δ T ) was 69 °C. The Vicker’s hardness of LTNWZ glass was 6.8 GPa. The area of transmission largely ranged from 354 nm to 7.28 μm wavelength. In this area, the glass remained colorless and optically transparent. The optical energy gap E opt was about 3.18 eV. The refractive index of as-prepared glass was 2.22 which was much higher than those of most optical glasses, and the Abbe number was 61 in the visible light range. In conclusion, the LTNWZ systems have potential applications from the visible to infrared region.
