Abstract A nano-grained structure 304L stainless steel sheet was fabricated through severe cold rolling (CR, rolling strain of 97%) and subsequently the evolution of its tribological mechanisms was firstly evaluated under dry and lubricated conditions. Compared with its coarse-grained samples, nano-grained CR sheets exhibited a weakened wear-resistance under dry conditions. It is attributed to the increase of grain boundaries exacerbating oxidative wear process. Polyalphaolefin (PAO4) can effectively improve the wear-resistance and friction-reduction of nano-grained CR samples. The revelation on the evolution of tribological mechanisms from severe oxidative to mild adhesive wear was beneficial for its industrial application with the anti-wear design.
