Abstract The relationship between the microstructure of intergranular corrosion of SLM 316L SS was investigated in this study. The experimental results revealed that SLM 316L SS could be sensitized at 650 °C as the treatment duration was larger than 6 h. Formation of the precipitated phases that accelerated by the sub-grain boundaries was responsible for the high susceptibility of SLM 316L SS to intergranular corrosion.
