Abstract Epsilon-negative materials are usually prepared by additive manufacturing, while a reverse design method needs to be developed to construct the epsilon-negative materials by subtractive manufacturing. Here the Nickel-Network/Epoxy composites were prepared via a chemical corrosion and curing process. The connectivity of nickel network was weakened by chemical corrosion, which was companied with a change of conductivity mechanism from metal-type conductivity to the hopping conductivity. The negative permittivity value could be effectively adjusted by corroding the nickel network, which was attributed to low-frequency plasmonic state of nickel network. The reverse design method provided a novel and more flexible method to construct the desired the epsilon-negative materials.
