Abstract Ultra-fine grained AA6061 coating was fabricated on the Q235 substrate by friction surfacing (FS). The grains of the coating were highly refined and equaixed due to the continuous dynamic recrystallization, and the precipitations were well-redistributed. As a result, the grain size and the fraction of low angle boundaries significantly declined. The A1* and A2* shear textural components were found in the FS coating. Furthermore, the corrosion current of the coating was less than that of the base materials, and the passive potential of the coating increased. The corrosion resistance of the passive file and aluminum alloy were both promoted after FS according to the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
