Abstract Red, green and blue upconversion emissions has been reported under the 808 nm excitation in Ln3+ (Ln3+ = Er3+, Tm3+, Yb3+) doped YNbO4 (YNO) phosphors prepared by the solid-state reaction method. Warm-white upconversion emission with CIE color coordinates equal to x = 0.34 and y = 0.35 was obtained in the YNO: 0.5%Er3+2.0%Tm3+15%Yb3+ composition under 9 W/cm2. This result was possible due to efficient synergistic process between Er3+/Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions. The significant improvement of red emission in the tri-doped sample was explained by the energy-transfer between Er3+ and Tm3+ ions. The upconversion mechanism and population processes are discussed in details.
