Abstract In this reported work, the hypereutectic Al-50Si alloys with a wide mushy zone of 465 °C were successfully fabricated using twin roll casting technique. The experimental results showed that the overall hardness of the roll-cast alloy increased, as a result of the decrease in the size of Si crystal and the increase in the relative solubility of Si in the α-Al. However, the EBSD results showed that the primary Si crystals in the twin-roll cast alloy grew according to twin plane re-entrant edge (TPRE) mechanism.
