Abstract Optical responses of Cs0.33WO3 nanoparticles is systematically studied by discrete dipole approximation method. The calculation results show that suitable particle size range for Cs0.33WO3 as heat shielding material is about 10 nm − 50 nm. For different shapes, the cuboid has best NIR extinction performance and the sphere exhibit worst. In addition, CWO@ZnO, CWO@SiO2 and CWO@TiO2 core–shell structures can be used as stable heat shielding materials for smart windows, but the shell has some negative effect on the NIR extinction property.
