Abstract ZrO2-based oxide coatings have been proved to be the promising protective coatings in aero-engine components due to excellent oxidation resistance and thermal insulation. This work reported a thin nano-multilayered (Al,Cr)2O3/ZrO2 coating synthesized by arc ion plating technique on the nickel-based superalloy. The results showed that the (Al,Cr)2O3/ZrO2 coating provided good oxidation resistance for the superalloy at 1200 °C due to the formation of α-Al2O3 phase and the interlayer interface structure, which blocked the oxygen inward diffusion. Moreover, the (Al,Cr)2O3/ZrO2 coating exhibited good temperature insulation. When the ambient temperature was 1100 °C, the substrate temperature was reduced by more than 40 °C.
