Abstract Arc welding of high-strength aluminum alloys is economical and reliable in industry, but it is often difficult in practice because they suffer from defects such as hot cracks and crater cracks. Here, we incorporate TiC nanoparticles into an Al-Mg-Mn alloy to produce nano-treated filler wire and successfully TIG weld similar systems of AA2024, AA5083, AA6061, and AA7075. As-welded samples exhibited no such defects, and their homogeneous weld metal microstructures showed globular grains smaller than 50 µm. Microhardness profiles of each weld showed sound mechanical behavior. Nano-treatment is therefore a promising solution to enable the arc welding of traditionally hard-to-weld alloy systems.
