Abstract A CuO-Al2O3 composite coating was obtained by an AC deposition and a followed secondary MAO treatment in an acidic copper sulfate electrolyte and an alkaline sodium hexametaphosphate electrolyte. Analyzes on phase and elemental composition and microstructure showed that a continuous CuO layer was formed on the top of the original MAO coating. EIS test suggested that after a secondary MAO treatment for 1 min, the samples obtained by AC deposition for 5 min had the best corrosion resistance, because of the barrier of CuO layer to the NaCl solution.
