Abstract Rechargeable Mg batteries attract interest because of the high natural abundance and dendrite-free metallic magnesium anode, but exploration of cathode materials is a main difficulty for the development. Herein, VSe2 nanosheets constructing hierarchical rods are fabricated by a facile one-step solvothermal method and investigated as cathode for rechargeable magnesium batteries. This cathode provides a high reversible Mg-storage capacity of 120 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and a good rate capability providing 57 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1, which are much better than simple VSe2 microplates. Further ex-situ investigation demonstrates the Mg storage process is a typical intercalation mechanism.
