Abstract A variety of promising applications are found relying on the ionic conductivity of sodium zirconate (Na2ZrO3). The ionic conductivity of Na2ZrO3 can be further enhanced by introducing metallic ions into the lattice of Na2ZrO3, which is becoming an emerging subject of interest. In the context of these, this letter presents a wet chemical method to obtain Na2ZrO3 by intentional substitution of Al at Zr sites. The obtained Al-substituted Na2ZrO3 was found to be crystalline, with enhanced sodium ion conduction (5.3 × 10−5 S/cm). Furthermore, we propose a mechanism for the sodium ion conduction in Al-substituted Na2ZrO3.
