Abstract In this study, two different methods, i.e., ionic liquid (IL)/dope solution blending and post-modification using IL were investigated in asymmetric PSf/SAPO-34 mixed matrix membrane (MMM) modification. The blending of [bmim][BF4] IL with MMM dope solution prior to phase inversion has enhanced the CO2 permeance up to 85.07 GPU but could not elevate the CO2/N2 selectivity since this method was not efficient in defects sealing. However, the defects have successfully been sealed via the post-modification method after phase inversion and resulted in more than 1000% CO2/N2 selectivity improvement over unmodified MMM.
