Abstract An Fe modified USY catalyst was built for ethanolysis of furfuryl alcohol to ethyl levulinate. Characterization results confirmed that Fe species was existed in the form of Fe2O3, and Fe/USY is modified by Fe2O3 in two aspects, viz., the strong acidic sites were sharply reduced, and also a large number of weak acid sites were generated. The first aspect effectively suppressed the oligomerization reaction of furfuryl alcohol and formation of diethyl ether, while the enhanced weak acid sites guaranteed activity of the catalyst. Finally, a 90.6% yield of ethyl levulinate was obtained under optimization conditions for four successive runs.
