Abstract A comprehensive comparison of the catalytic activities of alumina supported molybdenum phosphate (MoPO) catalysts with different loadings of MoPO was investigated in the vapor phase esterification of levulinic acid (LA) with ethanol (EtOH) to synthesize ethyl levulinate (EL). The catalysts were characterized by various techniques to find the surface and structural properties. The esterification reaction parameters such as MoPO loading on Al2O3, molar ratio of EtOH/LA, reaction temperature and reaction time were optimized. Raman and FT-IR studies confirmed the formation of pyrophosphate phase on alumina. XRD results revealed the presence of well dispersed MoPO species over alumina support. The esterification activity of these catalysts mainly depends on the number of acidic sites and dispersion of MoPO species.
