Abstract Herein, we have facilely fabricated a series of novel nickel-based layered double hydroxides catalysts with carboxymethyl chitosan as sacrificial template using an in situ method. A Ni1Mg4Al2-CMC-in situ catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance in benzophenone selective hydrogenation. The addition and elimination of CMC was confirmed to play an important role in increasing the BET specific surface area and improving the dispersion of the active Ni species. Furthermore, the strong interaction between the active species and support was also enhanced, simultaneously. These behaviors are believed to promote the catalytic efficiency and suppress the unexpected Ni aggregation. Considering its good catalytic performance and low cost, it has vast potential significance in the fabrication of nickel-based layered double hydroxides catalysts for catalytic reactions.
