Abstract In this work, a so-called multi-link torsion axle (MLTA) is introduced, which is a new type of rear suspension designed for the application in battery electric vehicles. It offers an increased and connected design space in the underbody that allows the integration of up to 30% bigger drive batteries and improved protection against rear and side crashes. For an efficient MLTA design, a calculation approach for the kinematics of the axle was developed and integrated into an optimisation algorithm with defined boundary conditions including kinematics, package and local elasticities. Optimised solutions could be found and compared with the conventional twist-beam axle (TBA).
