EnglishProctorrhagia is the emission of red blood through the anus in isolation or with faeces. Colonoscopy is the diagnostic technique of choice and should be performed early on; however, no optimal time for performing the procedure has been established. The shock index identifies patients who require hospitalisation and prioritises the diagnostic and therapeutic actions. When faced with a haemodynamically unstable patient with dark or bright blood issuing from the rectum or mixed with faeces, the recommendation is to perform gastroscopy before directly performing computed tomography angiography (CT) to rule out high gastrointestinal bleeding. Other diagnostic techniques include scintigraphy with red blood cell tags and capsule endoscopy. In most cases, proctorrhagia is resolved with conservative treatment. The treatment options for proctorrhagia can be endoscopic, radiological and surgical.
