Abstract 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde (2HN) is a notable fluorescent dye commonly employed in the Schiff base-hinged fluorophore development as a backbone for cations, anions and small molecules recognition. The most unsafe and troublesome analyte to the environment, biological systems as well as mankind is aluminum ion doubtlessly, reason to the higher volume of contaminations. In consequence, the researchers have been preferred and ended up with reasonable and trouble-free strategy for Schiff base derived fluorescent chemosensors for recognition of below par coordinating aluminum ion constructively with ample applicability. This commercially accessible amply conjugated 2HN molecule with polar groups (donor and acceptor) builds suitable environment for selective Al3+ binding when forms azomethine (imine) upon reaction with primary amines in the 1-position. Not just that, the precursor 2HN can be used in the synthesis of selective Al3+ sensor development due to the aluminum screening photophysical ability by itself and its vast Schiff base derivatives. Here in this review, our prime objective is to bestow the basic concepts and the current perspectives on Schiff base ligands of 2HN derivative as fluorescent chemosensors for specific recognition of aluminum ion. The significant conversation substances are about the powerful novel amines, binding mode, sensing mechanisms, quantitative results and applications which are all gathered from the most recent five years reports of various research groups.
