Abstract The synthesis and characterization of new, chiral and reactive single liquid crystals based on biphenyl benzoate core are described. Compounds are terminated with partially perfluorinated alkoxy chain (monoacrylates) or acryloyloxy-alkoxy chain (diacrylates) on the non-chiral side of molecule, while the opposite terminal side is chiral acryloyloxy unit. New families of smectic LCs present alternative molecular approach to the monomer design. Compounds are characterized by mass spectrometry (electron ionization) analysis, proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance. They show liquid crystal behavior in broad temperature ranges, confirmed by a polarizing thermomicroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Detailed synthetic procedures are attached. Synthesized compounds stand as promising candidates for polymer stabilization of chiral liquid crystalline materials.
