Abstract This study deals with novel ternary green solvents (TGESs) and their physical properties and thermal behavior studied in nitrogen atmosphere. Physical properties, such as density and viscosity, are decisive characteristics for any solvent. Thermal stability is a very important property related to future applications of TGESs, determining the thermal limits of their real application. TGESs are formed from three constituents, such as choline chloride, proline, betaine, alanine, glycerol, propanediol, ethyleneglycol, urea, malonic acid, malic acid, lactic acid and citric acid. Their thermal stability was comprehensively analyzed in the temperature range of 25–400 °C. Finally, different temperature characteristics were evaluated based on the mass decrease of the studied TGESs. The findings of this study broaden the knowledge about novel green solvents.
