SHORT SUMMARY The cells inside plants or animals have developed various strategies to deal with less oxygen compared to ambient air due to limited oxygen transport. Two recent studies reveal a regulatory function of hypoxia in plant meristems. In the shoot meristem and lateral root primordia, hypoxia affects meristem function by inhibiting the degradation of important regulatory proteins.
