Abstract As starting material, 4-((9-phenyl-9H-fluoren-9-yl) oxy) phthalonitrile ( 3 ) was synthesized and characterized. Cobalt ( 4 ), zinc( 5 ), and magnesium( 6 ) phthalocyanines were obtained by reaction of starting material with corresponding metal salt. The new synthesized phthalonitrile derivative ( 3 ) was characterized by X-ray crystallography in addition to with other spectroscopic methods. Phthalocyanine complexes were characterized by using electronic absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared and mass spectra. Furthermore, spectroscopic and photophysical properties such as absorption, excitation, and emission spectra of zinc and magnesium phthalocyanines were investigated in tetrahydrofuran solutions. Of compounds were determined the fluorescence lifetimes and the fluorescence quantum yields. The aggregation behavior for phthalocyanine complexes were carried out in tetrahydrofuran.
