Abstract Two novel metal-organic coordination polymers [Cd(ipdt)(m-BDC)·3H2O]n (1) and [Pb(mip)2(NTC) ·2H2O]n (2) [ipdt = 2,6-Dimethoxy-4-(1H-1,3,7,8-tetraaza-cyclopenta[l]phenanthren-2-yl)-phenol, mip = 2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, m-BDC = isophthalic acid, NTC = nicotinic acid] have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, infrared spectrum (IR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 exhibits two-dimensional (2D) layer architecture, and 2 shows 1D chain architecture. TG analysis shows clear courses of weight loss, which corresponds to the decomposition of different ligands. The luminescent properties for the ligand ipdt, mip and complexes 1–2 are also discussed in detail, which should be acted as potential luminescent material.
