Abstract [Cd(Anthranilate)2]H2O complex was prepared by the reaction of anthranilic acid with CdCl2 2.5H2O in 1:1 ratio. The complex was characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1HNMR and thermal analyses (TGA). The results suggested the formation of four coordinated species. The optical band gap (Eg) of the Cd(II) complex is 4.07 eV. The synthesized Cd(II) complex has been used as a precursor of CdO nanoparticles by thermal decomposition at 600 °C. The obtained CdO nanoparticles have been characterized by XRD and TEM. CdO nanoparticles crystallize in the cubic system. TEM images of the nanoparticles show nano-fibers with different lengths. The optical band gap of the synthesized CdO nanoparticles is 2.97 eV. The precursor and CdO nanoparticles have been used for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions with a removal % in the range 65–96%.
