Abstract Among shape memory materials, iron based shape memory alloys are of special interest. Its relative low cost encourages mass scale production, such as concrete reinforcement. Metallurgical design of new compositions is abundant, and corrosion resistance must always be a concern. In the present work, the influence of cerium in the corrosion properties of a Fe-14Mn-4Si-9Cr-4Ni-xCe (x = 0.0, 0.18, 0.42, 0.96) was determined by anodic potentiodynamic polarization and EIS in simulated pore solution, with 0.6 M NaCl. Results revealed that cerium is responsible for an improvement in corrosion properties, although there is a threshold where this element begins to be detrimental.
