Abstract In this work, the stress induced hexagonal close packed structure (α) to base-centered orthorhombic structure (α″) phase transformation were observed at the { 10 1 ¯ 1 } twin boundaries in a cold-rolled Ti-5at.%Al alloy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy observations showed that the { 10 1 ¯ 1 } twin boundary presents serrated character. The α to α″ transformation were produced at the { 10 1 ¯ 1 } twin-twin interaction area, serrated twin boundaries and twin tip to release the stress concentration. In addition, the {111}α″ transformation twin was produced associated with the α to α″ phase transformation.
