Abstract In this paper, robust passivity problem for a class of fractional-order uncertain neural networks (FUNNs) in the sense of Caputo’s fractional derivation is investigated. In particular, we consider two types of uncertainties (i.e. time-varying parameter uncertainty and interval uncertainty). With the help of linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques and control theories of fractional system, some sufficient criteria are derived to ensure passivity of FUNNs, which enrich and improve the earlier integer-order and fractional-order publications. Finally, two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical results.
