Abstract The multi-node rotary laser positioning system is a large scale coordinate measuring system based on the rotary-laser scanning technique. It is designed and developed for the industrial applications like joining of block sections, deformation measurement for line heating and so on. The most important characteristic of this system is enlarging the measuring space without loss of accuracy, but actually, it is necessary to make some deep analysis about this system to give full play to its superiority. In this paper, we use ill-posed measurement theory to analyze the multi-node rotary laser positioning system in order to explore the relationship between the measuring space and accuracy level. By derivation on the measurement equation, we find that the condition number of the observed matrix can reflect the mean square error of the measuring point. We construct a simulation model and set up an experiment to verify the correctness of our derivation. The simulation and experiment give the consistent results, which validate our theoretical inference. Also, our analysis gives guidance to optimum application of the multi-node rotary laser positioning system in shipbuilding.
