Abstract The use of Bessel light beams, as well as Bessel acoustic beams, substantially enhances the capabilities of acousto-optic methods for control of optical field. We present a theoretical study of the process of optical Bessel beams conversion by means of backward acousto-optic scattering on a Bessel acoustic field in a transversely isotropic crystal. It is shown that, with an appropriate choice of Bessel beams parameters, the backscattering in visible spectral range can be realized at relatively low acoustic frequencies less than one gigahertz. Under conditions of phase matching and transverse spatial synchronism, the efficiency of backscattering is sufficiently high, which is interesting, for example, for construction of acousto-optic spectral analyzers.
