Abstract This work presents the exact radial refractive index profile of a graded-index lens required to produce an annular beam. The index profile variation obtained is compatible with MCVD fiber fabrication process. Moreover, we show that the proposed annular graded-index lens coupled to a lens could replace the conventional axicon in several applications, thus avoiding tip defects and manufacturing difficulty.
