Abstract In recent years, direct current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) based visible light communication (VLC) systems have become popular due to numerous advantages. Nevertheless, the occurrence of a high peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) has been leading to the dreadful non-linear clipping distortion at light-emitting-diode (LED), which was the major problem in DCO-OFDM VLC systems. In this paper, we proposed a new PAPR reduction technique based on top samples detection and appending (TSDA), in which top samples are utilized to reduce the PAPR performance. We achieved an enhanced PAPR performance with the TSDA technique, compared to conventional selective mapping (SLM) and partial transmit sequence (PTS) techniques. TSDA technique not only enhanced the PAPR reduction but also reduced the computational complexity, compared to SLM and PTS. Additionally, the TSDA scheme requires no side-information, unlike SLM and PTS.
