Abstract A secure four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) based free-space-optics (FSO) communication system with self-injection-locked quantum dash-laser diode (QD-LD) and Reed-Solomon (RS) encoding scheme is proposed and demonstrated. This system transmit 88 Gbps data over 555-m long optical free-space link, with the help of eight modes of a self injection-locked QD-LD. Self-injection-locking technique diminishes the cost of master laser diode for external injection-locking. The RS coding technique keeps the signal safe from the external noise and decrease the power penalty. The clear eye-diagram and good bit error rate (BER) value established the feasibility of the system.
