Abstract In this paper we demonstrate color holographic projection using a noniterative multiplane hologram (NIMH) generation technique and space division multiplexing. We show how the NIMH technique can be used for generation of holograms from color intensity distributions with up to 5 discrete planes and an axial depth of 50 cm. Furthermore, the use of NIMH ensures that the computational cost of hologram generation remains low even with three wavelengths. We also perform quantitative evaluation of the color intensity distributions reconstructed from NIMHs compared with the standard sequential Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm. Finally, we perform experimental optical reconstruction of multiplane intensity distributions using a single phase only SLM, with adaptations that correct the chromatic aberration caused by space division multiplexing.
