Abstract Digital holographic measurement of rod-shaped particle size from inline holograms using a single-pixel of Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) coefficients is proposed. The proposed sizing method detects only the spatial frequency coordinate of the single WVD output coefficient with a minimum amplitude to measure the particle size. The proposed method has advantages over conventional numerical reconstructions in that iterative and time-consuming particle depth searches are obviated. Besides its faster response, its sizing accuracy is higher than the angular spectrum method and the previous WVD-based method because it is free from errors in depth-search. The proposed method is experimentally verified by using microtube objects with different diameters.
