Abstract Inspired by the non-smooth surface of some animals, we prepared biomimetic coupling units with various shapes on the surface of 7075 aluminum alloy. Wear resistance of the coupling units was investigated through experiments. It was found the non-smooth surface of biomimetic coupling units positively affected the wear resistance of 7075 aluminum alloy. Different forms of coupling units had higher wear resistance, and the most significant increase in wear resistance was explored through dot net composite bionic test. Finite element analysis showed changes in the shape and area ratio of the bionic units changed the stress distribution on the unit surface, and the mechanisms of wear resistance improvement were also analyzed.
