Abstract In this paper, a 3D ellipsoidal lens is designed based on the transformation optics (TO) method. The conventional Luneburg and Gutman lenses are mapped to an ellipsoidal lens to make a fan-beam radiation pattern. The Beamwidth of vertical and horizontal planes can be designed separately. The lens structure and its refractive index are axis-symmetric. So the fan-beam scanning can be resulted by rotating a source around the symmetric axis of the Lens in the horizontal plane. This structure can be used in search radar to estimate the azimuth angle of the targets. Full-wave simulations are performed using the software of CST.
