Abstract Intense ∼1.2 μm fluorescence is observed in Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped TeO 2 -BaF 2 -Y 2 O 3 glasses under 915 nm laser diode excitation. The 1.2 μm emission can be ascribed to the transition 5 I 6 → 5 I 8 of Ho 3+ . With the introducing of BaF 2 , the content of OH in the glasses drops markedly, and the 1.2 μm emission intensity increases gradually as increasing the concentration percentage of BaF 2 . Furthermore, microstructured fibers based on the TeO 2 -BaF 2 -Y 2 O 3 glasses are fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method, and a relative positive gain of ∼9.42 dB at 1175.3 nm is obtained in a 5 cm long fiber.
