Abstract In this study, transparent MgAl2O4 was obtained using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The primary powder was synthesized via a solid-state method. The synthesized process was optimized with 1 wt% LiF and heat treatment temperature of 1400 °C for 2 h. The resulting powder had the average grain size range of 200–400 nm. The granulation parameters include the different solid contents (30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55 wt%) and PVA contents (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 wt%) were investigated. The balanced solid and PVA contents were 55 wt% and 0.1 wt%, respectively. Furthermore, the effect of granulation of MgAl2O4 powder on the optical transparency was evaluated. The samples prepared by granulation process had a maximum light transmittance (80%) at the wavelength of 2.5–5 μm and 60–80% at the wavelength of 400–800 nm.
