Abstract In this work, natural extraction (NE) from spinach leaves is used as modifier for ZnO based electron transporting layer (ETL) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). And NE modifying decreased the work function of ZnO film, smoothed the surface of ZnO and enhanced the charge carrier extraction, resulting in much improved devices performance. The device founded on ZnO/NE ETL with PCE-10:PC71BM as the photoactive layer attained PCE (power conversion efficiency) = 9.41% (18.51% enhancement compared with that for device based on pure ZnO ETL), suggesting that NE is an interesting candidate as efficient modifier for ETL in PSCs.
