Highlights • Patterning of biosynthesis, catabolism and transport determines gibberellin distributions.• The first gibberellin transporters have only recently been discovered.• Novel methods are revealing spatiotemporal distributions of gibberellins in vivo.• Gibberellin gradients can be generated independently of biosynthesis patterns.• In some tissues, gibberellin levels correlate with cell elongation rates.
