Abstract An all too often question when designing field trials aimed at the validation of EOR techniques is how long the stimulation should last. In these trials, the stimulation period is proportional to the trial variable cost, hence the question related to period of trial execution. This article uses statistical power analysis to answer such a question. It demonstrates how statistical power of a trial design plays out as a function of its variables: total trial duration, its proportion under stimulation, the magnitude of the stimulation effect, and the level of variability and autocorrelation typically found in well production data.
