Abstract Background Pregnancy is a unique dynamic condition of altered anatomy, physiology, and immune functions. During pregnancy, the composition of maternal microbiota plays a pivotal role in nourishing maternal-fetal health and prevents the onset of various diseases in later childhood. Probiotics are living organisms which provide diverse health benefits when ingested in proper concentration or dosage. They play a pivotal role in restoring microbial flora. Methods In this review, we discuss various clinical studies from scholarly databases such as Embase, Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science to evaluate the clinical efficacy of probiotics during pregnancy. Results The findings demonstrate the beneficial role of probiotic interventions in alleviating various disease conditions in pregnant women such as gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-eclampsia, obesity, dyslipidemia, and mental disorders. Clinical studies also suggest that the use of probiotic therapy during the gestation period can prevent the development of allergic diseases in early childhood. Conclusions The administration of probiotics in pregnant women is crucial in providing long-lasting health benefits to mothers and their offspring.
