Abstract In this paper, we investigate the synchronization dynamics of clustered network with positive and negative connections and report a counterintuitive phenomenon: the removal of a heterogeneous (generator to consumer nodes and vice versa) positive link in oscillatory power network suppress synchronization. However, a heterogeneous negative link removal of power network can enhance synchronizability. Moreover, our results establish that a homogeneous (generators to generators or consumers to consumers) positive link deletion has a small effect on the synchronizability of the power network. But the removal of a homogeneous negative link plays a positive role on collective behavior of oscillatory power network.
