Abstract This paper uses a simulation method to study the effect of the interior space of trains on evacuations. First, this paper presents the experimental method and verifies the effectiveness of using simulation models to simulate the evacuation process of train passengers. A factorial design of experiments is employed to study the effect of the interior space on evacuation. The interior space factors that are studied include door width, aisle width, and seat pitch. The main effects and interaction effects of these factors are analyzed using a regression model. The validation results show that the simulation model is suitable for train evacuation research. The experimental results show that the seat pitch and the interaction of the seat pitch and the aisle width impact the evacuation time. Moreover, a reasonable door width has no effect on evacuations.
