Abstract Pairs of YBa2Cu3O 7 − δ rings, which behave as magnets due to persistent currents circulating through them, were coaxially confronted and the force between them has been measured at different distances. The constance of the magnetic flux through the rings’ holes requires that the currents increase as they are bring closer. Our results show that very high currents, well above the initial ones, can be induced at short distances. In addition, it is also proved the viability of our procedure for the reversible conversion of mechanical work into electromagnetic energy that is stored in the rings as permanent currents.
