Abstract Four different holmium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and their structures solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The origin of dimeric clusters in the structure, commonly observed in lanthanide-based MOFs, is proposed and discussed. Additional characterization is presented to understand the stability of these materials. The structural features including the dimeric holmium clusters in all the MOFs is discussed and it opens the possibility to design more holmium-based MOFs.
